Fisheries officers from the Environment Agency attended the docks today. It is thought that the number of fish dying could be due to the algae bloom that is taking place. Algae produces oxygen during the day through photosynthesis, but also quickly consume oxygen at night during respiration. Many of the dead fish are larger because they need more oxygen. They are effectively suffocating in the early hours of the morning. The colour of water is another indication of this. This poses no risk to water users.
